From the Car Wash to the Dentist

Ok, I refuse to go to the dentist, and I admit I'm afraid. A room full of smell of antiseptic, and a stranger with his face half-covered, you don't know if he's smiling or smirking. And everywhere, strange equipments, some with ultra-strange noises.

So, this morning, I texted Jun Jie, told him I wasn't going down for the carwash, and attempted to sleep the pain away, assisted by panadol. Worked well. But, I woke up with nothing to do for the day.

Quite exasperating. I'm still trying to think what I should do now. Maybe play more Scrabble to redeem myself for missing the carwash

Oh no, Getting too Old

Ok, my Christmas plan to go lights viewing at Orchard kind of backfired because I slept til 5pm after the stayover with my NPCC mates. But, nobody goes lights viewing with all the pitter-patter rain. It has been drizzling all day long, making it a moody and emo Christmas. Juz right for playing Khalil Fong's newest Orange Moon on my playlist. Fits nicely with the mood right now. A little blue, a little soul and a little R&B.

Not that I want to be contradictory, but this rainy Christmas eve has been quite a warm and happy one. I love my dear ol' NPCC mates because I feel most comfortable around them, and it isn't a gathering that I grudgingly lug myself to. They say people change, but these people that I've known for at least 5 years don't change much, do they? Same kind of jokes and banter, same kind of chemistry.

It's amazing how it's the guys who're doing all the chores at the gathering. The barbequeing, the washing up and the paying. Haha. And I have a new Shifu, though I very much don't want to acknowledge Mr Koon. Thanks for teaching me Bridge (I finally want to learn), though I sometimes play better than you. LOL. Ok, it's quite an addictive game after a while, though I'm still not soo good at it.

Also, Mahjong and Bridge are for the old (Hate to admit it), and the young now play drinking games. We're old and we can't afford to drink and get high. Haha. Ok, fine, we're boring. But I love boring old us.

It's a weird Christmas, and I love weird Christmases.

Seasons Greetings,
Moon

Freak

I finished the bulk of Freakonomics during the mornings in hall when I was at Kidsworld camp, uninterrupted and undisturbed. Then, I wrapped up reading it yesterday night and thought to myself: What the heck is it trying to say? It is indeed true that there's no unifying theory though the absurdity of the links Levitt and Dubner drew made me laugh out a little. Mostly the book was about induction, by observing what's happening in the real world and trying to match phenomena using desirable explanations. Plus backing up with some statistics and tables.

This makes me think of something that happened this morning while I was buying Macs. After I made my order, I had to wait for my Egg McMuffin. There was an auntie behind me that was trying to be triple-sure that the auntie behind the cashier remembered that she wants no cheese on her Sausage McMuffin. Ok. Then, my Egg McMuffin was finally ready on the counter, but I was distracted by "I don't know what". Auntie-behind-me thought it was hers and swift as lightning, grabbed the burger, opened it and told the auntie-behind-cashier demandingly that she had wanted no cheese. But, gosh, that's like my burger!

The auntie-behind-cashier looked sheepishly at me and attempted to berate the auntie-behind-me. But, well, I didn't really mind taking the burger since not much harm was done and I certainly didn't want to waste food. But, the auntie-behind-cashier was adamant about making a new one for me and explained to me it was their service policy. Now, I know Macs' service policy includes a little food wastage.

Now, what's the trade-off, you ask? There's almost near-zero chance that I'll contract some food poisoning from an exposed-to-air burger, especially when I'm someone who practices the 30-50 seconds rule, that says that something that drops on the floor is still very much edible. Also, if she had judged me by my looks, she would know that I'm a harmless little lamb and not an irate customer who would demand to see some higher-up authority. My love for Macs would outweigh the possibility of me boycotting Macs just because of one "unpleasant" incident which I could hardly call unpleasant.

Instead, by refusing me the burger, and making another one for me, I had to wait an additional 10 minutes, which might have made me miss the previous bus. Also, if you count social incentives, exiling a burger to the bin does not make a lot of sense as that's a total waste of food.

However, there might be one positive externality after all. Maybe, she did have a reason for refusing me the burger. That is, if you remember that the primary principle of economics is an individual would want to maximise his own gains and work towards his or her benefit, for all kinds of selfish reason, the auntie-behind-cashier totally wanted my burger for herself, at no cost. She would have gotten herself a free lunch.

ZOMG. So unethical.

Well, I don't really know whether I love kids or not. I'm not that excited about having a lot of them around me, but I'm good with most of them. Though I miss Kidsread and LEO's street camp, this time round, it was more of looking forward to doing something together with the neighbours. I guess we were quite nua but in the end, I did have fun after all. The kids were a mischievious bunch, and we had to use different tactics with different individuals. However, something left quite an impression on me.

We were waiting to rehearse the skit and I went out for a breather when I heard two of my girls having a bicker. Apparently, it had something to do with race, with one calling the other 'black charcoal', which was really mean. I could say I dealt with it in an 'ok' way, trying to let things cool down between them and then divert the topic. It actually brought me down memory lane, because when I was in primary school, I remember I once cried all the way home because some Malay girls "bullied" me. After that incident, I actually weren't that keen on mixing with that group or even other non-Chinese girls, though it became better after I grew up. The period in CCHMS was like a "cool-down" period. It's hilarious, especially how I even had a 'thang' for Malay guys during my Secondary school days. Well, words do hurt and I must have said something bad to anyone of a different race some point in my life. Now, I try to refrain from saying anything that is discriminatory in nature, because I think we shouldn't group people like that. A cliche: Singaporean first, then Chinese.

But, besides this, the highlight came after the camp. 010 totally 'throw face' when she tried to hitch a ride from KUNGFU PANDa and succeed. I was trying to stifle giggles on the ride to Hall 9 on a "stranger"'s car. AHAHA.

Then, yesterday, me, neighbours and Ms Wai Ting went for Chunk Fest. And i thought it was free ice-cream. The double scoops costed a whopping 8 bucks. But I still had them, because ice-cream's my weakest link. It was shoulder-to-shoulder at Fash Bash and my head was spinning with all the colours on the racks. In the end, I bought nothing.

Anyway, I'm like...back on MSN. *Sheepish* Well, I have more time to spare. But, I'll try to restrict it to intelligent conversation. To keep myself sane, and everyone else sane as well.

And, I'm like...so addicted to...小娘惹

Fast Forward to the Weekend

This weekend is a happening one! There's the B & J's Chunk Fest as well as another Fash Bash. They're located so near to each other that I would call them a 2-in-1 package. We're set on going for the free ice cream so I'll MAKE them accompany me to The Cathay for a while for some retail therapy too. Then we could get a nice dinner at PS after that :)

I'm hitting Haji Lane with A Quek on Sunday too. Such a packed weekend...though I'm not complaining.

I was getting a little emo these few days but the 1142 gathering yesterday cheered me up soooo much. HUGS AND KISSES for all the nonsensical fun.

Mum and Dad have been complaining that every other country besides Singapore seems so unsafe with the protests in Bangkok, the Mumbai attacks as well as all the other unrest that has been reported on TV. I had to remind them that Singapore's not so safe too as we had our fair share of "possible" terrorist attacks a few years back. They once discovered maps that detailed attacks on Changi Airport, the US embassy in Singapore as well as a bus carrying US soldiers when police raided a house in Afghanistan. I just told them not to be complacent as anything like that could happen to us, especially if we're ill-prepared. Ok, I get very "preachy" when I watch the news with Mum and Dad. Sometimes, I even blow my top when people don't get the full picture of what's happening in the world and get all arrogant.

Maybe i should just cool down.
